Why did people move to the town from the countryside in the 17th and 18th centuries

On Monday, 4 February, in class we looked at some of the reasons people moved to the towns and cities during the 18th and 19th centuries.  I would like you to think about your character in our village and post a comment about how you feel about moving:  Did you have to move? Why? Were you forced?  Are you happy to go? Why?  Who do you blame for being forced to move?  What will you miss?

Think about the above questions as you write your comment and try to include as much detail and opinion as you can

Good luck!

This work should be completed by Monday 18th February

  2. I'm a fletcher in our village and I moved to Cardiff because of The Lord of the manor kicked me out of my house. I am pleased that I moved away because I got a job and so did my wife so we can both pay the bills not just me. Our family is pretty big so this was the best move in the the right direction!!!

  4. I am villains wife and was forced to move Liverpool due to lack of work in the county, despite the lack of enthusiasm me and my family had we have now realized that despite the lack of clean air and space we still continue to stay strong and see that in the long run our new jobs pay more meaning that we could have a better lifestyle even if the town ins't perfect.

  5. As a Freeman, it was a shame to leave my house for the big city of London. At least I won't be bossed about by the Bailiff anymore. As less jobs were available, going to London was our only option. I heard that there were a lot of jobs in the city and i thought it would be safer due to the increase in the number of doctors here and the fact that there are less bandits on the roads. My new job pays well. I am an assistant to a baker. We had a lot more space in our old house but the Lord of the Manor kicked us out, as he wanted more farming space. All in all, my family and i are happier now.

  7. Hi, I am a Cartwright and I got forced to moveout of my home with my family. I have managed to make my way to Liverpool with my wife and my children. I nearly left our lovely village in the peaceful countryside because I was running out of customers but I scaped up a few to send sell to. I had to leave because the LORD kicked me out of our home in our now tiny bunch of houses. I quite liked my life in our small but friendly village and I am really sad to go but there wasn't much people there anymore. I am really annoyed at the LORD because if it wasn't for him our small little community would still be alive. At least we are not in the custody of the LORD anymore and my family is surviving LUCKILY with the lack of clean air, space and all the fumes coming out of the factories nearby but at least we get more freedom and time to ourselves.

  8. I am a villeins wife and I was forced to move to the city where I don't really want to live but that's my new lifestyle. I have to move because work is bad and the lord of the manor has kicked me out of my house. My family have found our new lifestyle challenging and completely different. There is no clean air and is VERY crowded and noisy. The town has more freedom but still my family and I are copping alright though we do miss the countryside.

  11. I am a farmers wife I was kicked out of the village because there where no jobs of me and the landlord wanted to destory our house so that he could use the land for farming. I am happy to go to the city because in the city I found out that there are many jobs and I will get paid better money then before. I blame the landlord for having to move. At first I was scared and sad to have to go but once we were settled in I was fine. I will miss the countryside, the fresh air, my farm and all of my valuables.

  12. I am a freeman's wife, and I have been evicted out of my village so the lord of the manor can flatten it. Apparently we're ruining his view. The good thing is that more money is coming in now as we actually get to keep all the money we earn. we also have so much more freedom with our lives now.

  16. I was the village carpenter until the village lord forced all of my customers out of the village which meant I had to go because no customers means no money. But now I am looking for a job in London to get money for food and family.
I blame the lord a lot for my job loss as he was the one who forced my customers away. I am upset that I had to leave the greenery but at least I don't need to see that lord again.

  17. I was the village wainwright and i had to move because my house was demolished by the landlord. As well as this my services were no longer needed due to the leap forward in technology. I don,t like it in the city and i miss the simple country life. I blame the selfish and greedy landlord for this abrupt and unfortunate move.

  20. I am a freeman and i'm totally outraged about the way the Lord treats us. Firstly he goes and takes most of our hard earned money then he demolishes our village. Now we've been forced to move to a town leaving everything we knew behind. I'm not happy at all seeing as I will have to leave my cattle and my farm just so the Lord will have a better view of the countryside. :(

  21. Life in the middle ages is hard for a blacksmith like me because people get forced out of the town so I don't have any customers to sell to. Me and my family are moving to London because there are a lot of families that live there who I can sell to. I feel that this is a much bigger step in my work but I'm sad to leave the village as London will be very crowded.

I am a freemans wife, i have been kicked out my house and forced to move to a town. I'm sad to say bye to my village but happy to leave the lord and the baylift. There are more jobs and higher wages in towns so i cant wait to get myself a good job. Living in the countryside was awful; always being bossed around and doing everything to please the lord but now i can be free.
