"A day in the life of the Middle Ages"

You now know enough about the work done in the Middle Ages and by which sort of people to be able to write a comment on this blog about "a day in the life" of your character.
You each have a character in our village and all of you have different amounts of work to do, for you or for other people, and different responsibilities.
Write a comment about how you feel about your life, what is going on in it?  Do you like it? Do you think it is  fair?  What would you change?  Do you blame anybody for your life?
Extension:  When you have made your own comment - reply to somebody else's.  Do you agree with them? Why? Do you disagree with them? Why?  What would you say to them if you could?  Get into a discussion with them.   Argue your point of view with evidence and examples - prove to them that you are right and they are wrong.

Good luck!

  1. My job as a Villian's wife is a misery have no life, I work for my lord and pretty much work is all I do ; 20% of my life is spent working for myself and my life in its self and the last 80% of my time is spent working for the lord.

My worst ever nightmare is to be whipped by the Bailiff if i was to be whipped i would most likely get hung or killed in some way shape or form for poor work ....

  2. im a villen and i work for the lord of the manor, unfortunately. He makes overly priced taxes and makes me work for him without pay. Still better than the bailiff he takes my money and whips me if i do something wrong for the lord of the manor, still better stay on his good side so i dont get whiped. My life's a misery thanks to those two :[

  3. life as a freeman is easyer than a villien because villien have to work harder than a freeman and villien spend longer working for the king then freeman. By Ben west

  4. My day has been exausting, I have made lots of barrels today and the King bought them all for half the price it cost me to macke them. I dont like being a Cooper because I work hard, doing tough work and heavy lifting and the King doesnt pay muche for them. Its not fair becuase the King should pay the same amount as the free men and the villians. Now I am poor and I cant afford the meaterials to make more.

  5. I am a Freemans wife and life is awful! Why does the lord of the manor get to walk around doing no work while the rest of us work our backsides off! How unfair! Not only do our husbands have to work most days but we also have to pay rent to own small bits of land! We have to pay to use the mills to ground our corn and we cant even bake our own bread - we have to pay the lord of the manors bakers to use the ovens and to bake our bread! Isn't life a pain. At least we have a better life then those poor villeins. I hate the Bailiff as he walks down our street with a big smug smile waiting for our money! Who could be that cruel? I personally blame that silly Lord of the manor and his little personal helper the Bailiff!

  6. Hello my job is a fairmans wife, and i am not the one who is in control my husban is.My life is very hard but it isnt as hard as the velleins life becuase they need to ask for loads more permission. We fairmans wife only need to ask permission to bake our bread and to cut our corn whereas, the vellien have to ask and pay for loads more for example for there wifes to get married and pay for there sons to get married to and to leave the village and many, many more.I do not like my job because there is loads to do but we do have to do very little jobs for the lord whereas the villeins have to do loads for the lord.I think this life is not fair because the lord doesnt do anythink whereas the fairmans wife and veillens do loads also i think that it isnt fair that the lords helper takes our money and we have to ask for permission.I would change loads for example i would change how many jobs we do for the lord, and how the rules are to be more fair, aswell changening how much money and permission we have to ask for.I do blame someone for my life and that person is the lord. The reason i blame him is because he takes our money and hes the one who we have to ask permission for!

  8. I am a Cartwright and my life is mainly in control by the lord of the manor. I always hate thinking of what the lord is doing; sitting around on his backside doing nothing but counting his money. I also dread the Bailiff coming round taking money off us villagers. I am no poor because of the over priced taxes that the lord comes up with. I am no so poor I can't afford to buy the equipment and the materials that I need to make the wheels and carts. But my job isn't as bad as the villeins. They have to do 80% of their work for the lord but us freemen only have to do about 30%. Their lives must be misery's. But hopefully my live won't be such a misery. I do blame two people for my life and they are the lord of the manor and his smug little bailiff

I am no so poor that I can't afford to buy all the equipment and materials that I need to build the wheels for that carts that I make. But my life isn't as bad as some peoples. The villeins job is harder than us freemens as they have to do 80% of their work for the lord of the manor as us freemen only have to do about 30% and the rest of the work is for us. The villeins must be really puffed out at the end of each day. Their lives must be a massive misery but hopefully my life and the other freemens and their wifes won't be such a misery as theirs is. However I do blame someone for my life, well actually two people and that is the lord and his silly little smug bailiff

  11. Another day of boring work for the Lord. We Freemen had to do a lot of ploughing today in the field, and the Bailiff made us work a lot harder than usual. The annoying Bailiff then came round collecting yet more money from me, even though I only paid him what I owed him two days ago.

It's unfair that we have to do so many jobs for the Lord, whilst he does absolutely nothing.I feel so sorry for the Villeins who have to do even more work than us. We have to do 30% of our jobs for the Lord, whilst they have to do 80% extra jobs for him.

All I've got to look forward to is another tiring day of ploughing. However at least I don't have the plague!

  13. I am a Freeman's wife, and life is so hard for women! We don't own anything because our husbands own it all, which is SO unfair! We are just as good as good as men! I blame the the lord of the manor, he is so evil! we're not even aloud to move villages. Although, i suppose i have it lucky, at least i'm not one of those villeins, but our life is still hard. We are forced to pay to use the lord of the manors oven when we need to bake bread, and the prices are not cheap, we also have to pay to use HIS mill to grind OUR corn. 30% of my work is done for the lord of the manor the other 70% is done for me, but this is still unfair because while we work our socks of, the lord of the manor is doing nothing. and his little annoying bailiff is always taking money off of everyone, which is extremely greedy, as we have already payed for everything else. no wonder the lord is so rich!

    Life not fair!

  17. Another boring day working for the Lord. We freemen had to do a lot of ploughing today in the fields which takes forever. Then the annoying Bailiff came and made us work a hundred times harder. Later on he came and took even more money, even though I only paid him money two days ago.

  18. I am a freeman's wife and my life is really hard.we don't own anything because are husbands do.us woman are as good as good as men really.the person I blame for a horrible life is the lord of manor and the baillif.but really I've got it easy because a velliens has got to do what I do plus more so have got it easier.when we need to cook and stuff like that we have to get permission and pay to use. the work we do most of it goes to the lord of manor and a little bit goes to us.

    LIFE IS SO UNFAIR

  19. I work as a Shepherd, which means I am a Freeman. I think the amount of work I do is unfair plus the Lord of the Manor controls our lives. He won't let me harvest my own crops which is a total outrage, he also buys the wool off me for half the price that it cost me to clean, stretch and dye it.

  20. I am a villein's wife. I am very poor and do not own anything at all. My life is totally unfair. I blame the lord of the manor because he thinks he owns my life. I would defiantly change about who rules me (it should be me not the lord of the manor). I am one of the poorest people in the village. I should not have to ask the lord of the manor if I can get my daughter married.

  21. I am the lord of the manor and my life is easy because I get people to do my job's for me . I feel lucky to have all this money and I suppose I could spend more on the villagers but why should I? my family have ruled this land for a long time.

I am a freeman in our village and I am so tired after a days work.I work three tenths of my day for him then I can do my daily job as a fletcher, that puts the feathers on the arrows to make the shot even for the archer.I always need to do a better job for him other wise he whips me.I hate it when the bailiff comes walking down the road to collect some money we owe and trust me we always need to owe some money.
